Another winter

Another year draws to a close,
It’s time to bring out the warm clothes
To protect me from the cold and getting colder
Perhaps warm this lonely heart
As alone I grow old and ever older.

Barely had I given thanks
Were the stores all tinsel and shine
Bringing to mind the lonely time
That has passed since you were mine.

You left just after Christmas several years ago
And yet it seems like just yesterday
With passing years as brief reminders
Of the life I’ve come to know.
We were going to grow old together
We thought we had it made
In our love nest like a fairytale
Protected from the wild world
We had a cocoon.
Who didn’t feel it when they came to visit –
the magic we had created?
Never imagining that our joy would be taken from within.

Images of long walks through the forest,
coming out into a clearing and basking in the sun as we sat on a bench,
the icy crystals sparkling all around us through the rays of the sun.
The guests we had, the friends who came,
bringing flowers and special gifts,
to share a meal or afternoon coffee
with pastries bought from the Hungarian princess
who knows this life is just a dream.
Royalty is her true destiny.
Images of the first time we met –
you in your Citroen with the top down.
your golden hair flying in the wind,
and you were talking to me.
You singled me out among them all.
